Dr. Suess Night
Harry Potter Learning Carnival
Be a Hero Run
Dr. Suess Night is a event that we hold during Dr. Suess Week. This year, it was held at a local after school program that services inner-city youth.
At Dr. Suess Night, there are several literacy stations that are all related to a different book. Students engage in fun educational activities in a hands-on way!
Harry Potter Learning Carnival is a STEM and Literacy based event for local middle school students. Gannon's chapter of SPSEA partnered with our chapter of Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society to host this fun night of learning. Both organizations collaborated to create unique stations that focused on middle school concepts. Two stations were hands-on science experiments and the other two stations incorporated the theme of Harry Potter into literacy activities such as reader's theater and reading comprehension.
SPSEA and KDP applied for the National Education Association CREATE Grant to fund this event. We chose to partner with a local non-profit organization, The Boys and Girls Club of Erie, to give the students an opportunity to experience Gannon's campus along with an engaging night of learning.
SPSEA has partnered with the Erie County Child Abuse Prevention Task Force to put on the Be a Hero Run in April. The CAPT is committed to the prevention of child abuse and neglect through advocacy, education and public awareness. All proceeds from this run benefit CAPT and their mission.
SPSEA sends volunteers each year to help with registration, hand out water and snacks, and provide encouragement to the runners. It is a lot of fun watching all the runners come each year dressed as different superheroes!
